The Anatomy of Huawei E355 Mobile Wifi Smart HSPA+

The new breed of wireless internet comes from another series of 4G technology. Although frequency band is different from 4G WiMAX or LTE, the HSPA+ an extension to HSDPA/HSPA/UMTS can attain upto 21.6mbps of download speed (reality is far behind). WiMAX is under 2.4GHz to 2.7GHz or rather the most enhanced version of your laptops WirelessLAN(11g). The E355 lies on frequency band of WCDMA2100 2.1GHz.

For me, 7mbps to 12mbps stable speeds can make me a happy hacker --harhar--. But telcos catering for this services provides Fair Usage Policy(FUP) and shared connectivity on burst speed mode. So, currently I can attain 2.5mbps to 4mbps on full-scale 3G areas and hitting around 8mbps to 9mbps on HSPA+ available areas in the metro.

HUAWEI Mobile WiFi E586 is a high-speed packet access mobile hotspot. It is a multi-mode wireless terminal for SOHO and business professionals, it can support 5 Wi-Fi devices connecting and can stay online anytime and anywhere.

* I made this as an experiment on my own. Trying to explore the conditions and options to provide an effective air-to-air connectivity via 3G/4G using a YAGI directional antenna for hi-gain reception. Just exploring just like the old days of my amateur radio hobby(HAMS) & homebrews. I'm just planning to make one (Yagi Antenna) soon.
** I do not hack for money. I do not make openline services to unlock your devices. 'I hack by my own!'
*** I do not repair devices for money or neither support repairs online.

Hi,

i am planning on building a outdoor/stationed solar/battery powered mifi router as i have to bridge 500m up a hill to get 3G connection. The Huwaei E355 looks promising for that - can you provide some more details eg:

Power Consumption (mA drawn from the USB Port) - [I use USB power of at least 1-ampere, better if you have USB power bank of at least 2000mAh with a solar-charger. The E355 heats a lot and draws more than 500mA when its fully-utilized bandwidth transfer.]

There seem to be two HIROSE connectors - however cannot tell what connectors they are exactly - can you tell what kind of HIROSE connector this is and wether you assume them they are for WiFi or 3G - [the 2 HIROSE connector (identical) is not the 3G antenna, Im not not sure also if its the Wifi b/g/n antenna.]
can you provide Details about the 3G connector on the side ? - [the connector is CRC9, you will be needing a CRC9 connector if you are going to use an external antenna.]
does the device auto power on - when power is applied to the usb port ? (if not any chance in getting the device to auto power on by holding the button continuously ? - [YES, and the HSDPA/UMTS/3G connection is can be set via web GUI remotely via Wifi connection and it can be Automatically 'Connects' to your Telecom/ISP as you prefer.]
Any Idea on where the WIFI Antenna is (the images are a bit blurry) - i need to replace it with a highly directional antenna as i assume that wlan power output will be very low - [Exactly low... this is for indoors only. I suggest if you could have at-least a small/portable wfi/3G router like this

http://www.topbuy.com.au/tbcart/pc/Portable-Mini-150M-802-11n-WiFi-Wireless-3G-Router-White-p147259.htm?utm_source=TopBuy_Shopbot&dismode=1&utm_content=952&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=TBLC-XX1020494

...and a USB modem Dongle like E353 will do to connect on a portable wifi router. Or another Wifi range extender to have better reception within 500m away.]
